Chicago Cubs - First Night Game

The first Chicago Cubs night game was scheduled to be played on Aug 8, 1988 abasing the Philadelphia Phillies. The Cubs were the last team to install lights at their field. Owner Philip Wrigley had planned to install lights in 1942, but plans were put on hold due to World War II. It would take the Cubs 46 years to play that initial night game

The game started and both teams played until a summer downpour ended the game. The Cubs were leading 3-1. The game was called and the first night game would take place the following night, Aug 9 with the New York Mets coming to town. The Cubs would defeat the Mets 6-4 before 36, 399 fans

The game scheduled for Aug 8, would be made up on Sept 5, as part of a double-header. The Phillies defeated the Cubs 4-3

 The Providence Grays were a National League team, playing in Providence, Rhode Island from 1878 - 1885. The team played at Messer Street Grounds, winning the National league title in 1879 and 1884.

Following the 1884 season they won the first World Series over the New York Metropolitans of the American Association

18 sporting events were contested: Softball, Soccer, Boxing, Basketball, Golf Athletics, Swimming, Netball, Table Tennis, Weight-lifting, Board Sailing, Bowling, Tennis, Volleyball, Rugby-Union, Cricket, Squash and Hobie-Cat

He was kind enough to draw his new original character that he hopes will help promote baseball to the girls who go to the game with their dads.

The Norwalk Stamp Club utilized sports related paintings by 1930s Norwalk artist George Avison to be used as their cachet. The sports covered were baseball, basketball (Sept 10) and football (Sept 12)

The covers feature the Oyster Festival Sporting Station postmark, with a baseball "pearl" in the oyster for the Sept 11 postmark, the other days feature the sport appropriate ball in the oyster
