Intercontinental Cup - Italy : 1973


August 30, 1973 Rome

The 1973 Intercontinental Cup was the inaugural series of the long-running international baseball tournament. Italian baseball federation (FIBS) president Bruno Bedeck was dissatisfied with Latin America's dominance of the sport of baseball's International Baseball Federation (FIBA). Bedeck formed a splinter group FEMA, which organized the tournament in 1973.
FEMA and FIBA would merge in 1976.

The history of Italian baseball starts in 1884, when the first game was played. Popularity increased following World War II, when US soldiers taught the game to the locals. The first professional league game was played in 1948.
