Babe Ruth - 1983

George Herman "Babe" Ruth became the second baseball player to gain his own stamp issue. The Babe became a legend for his prowess on and off the field. A talented pitcher for the Boston Red Sox, a powerful slugger for the New York Yankees. He was a friend to all children, had his own radio show and starred in several silent movies.

July 6, 1983 on the 50th anniversary of baseball's annual All-Star game, being played in Chicago, the USPS honored Babe in his famous home run pose. The stamp was designed by Richard Gangel.
The USPS held a dedication July 5 for the stamp at Comiskey Park following an All-Star Old-Timer's Day game. A special dedication folder was available without a stamp or postmark. The official ceremony was held at the Chicago Main Post Office..
