Home Run Race - 25th Anniversary

1986-Oct-01 Bronx NY - Stadium Station

1961 - Yankee home runs began to come at a record pace. As mid-season approached, it seemed quite possible that either Roger Maris or Mickey Mantle, or perhaps both, would break Babe Ruth's 34-year-old home run record. Sportswriters began to play the "M&M Boys" against each other, inventing a rivalry where none existed; in fact, the two men were friends and roommates. Mantle would be hampered by a hip infection and finished with 54 home runs

Maris hit his 61st home run on October 1, 1961, in the fourth inning of the last game of the season, at Yankee Stadium in front of 23,154 fans

Gameday Postmark - This Day in Baseball

July 22, 1954 New York
In the Spirit of Paul Revere - Buy Defense Bonds slogan machine cancel/postmark
Buy Defense Bonds slogan in use 1951-1963

On this day - In an attempt to put more pop in the lineup, Casey Stengel moved Mickey Mantle from centerfield to shortstop, to replace a weak-hitting Willy Miranda. The experiment works as Mantle homers in the 10th inning giving the New York Yankees the 3-2 victory over the Chicago White Sox, at Yankee Stadium

CHW RBI: Nellie Fox 2 (3B)
NYY RBI: Mickey Mantle 2(HR), Yogi Berra (HR), Eddie Robinson (HR)
Winning Pitcher in relief: Johnny Sain
