Jason Bay - Canadian-American professional baseball left fielder who played 11 seasons in Major League Baseball. Initially drafted by the Montreal Expos, he played for the San Diego Padres (2003), Pittsburgh Pirates (2003-2008), Boston Red Sox (2008-2009), New York Mets (2010-2012) Seattle Mariners (2013)

Bay debuted with the Padres on May 23, 2003, getting his first major league hit, a home run, in the ninth inning. Two days later, he suffered a broken right wrist after being hit by a pitch. August 26, 2003, Bay was traded to the Pittsburgh Pirates, along with Óliver Pérez and Cory Stewart in exchange for Brian Giles. He finished the season with a .287 batting average, four home runs, and 14 RBI in 30 games.

2004: Bay batted .282 in 120 games, leading all major league rookies in home runs (26) and RBIs (82). He led all NL rookies in slugging percentage (.550), extra base hits (54) and total bases (226). With his 26 home runs, Bay broke a Pirates rookies record of 23 set by Johnny Rizzo in 1936 and matched by Ralph Kiner in 1946. Selected as the 2004 NL Rookie of the Year by The Sporting News, Bay was the second Pittsburgh Pirates player honored with the award, after second baseman Johnny Ray in 1982. Bay was also the first Canadian player to win the award

Honus Wagner bronze statue by Frank Vittor, created to honor former Pittsburgh Pirates shortstop. Originally dedicated April 30, 1955 at Schenley Park, the statue was relocated in 1972 to Three Rivers Stadium and then relocated to PNC Park

Bill Madlock

Bill Madlock won his 4th batting title, as the Pittsburgh Pirates defeat the Philadelphia Phillies 4-0 at Veterans Stadium.
Madlock did not play in the game, but finished his season the previous day with 1 at bat and no hits, before being pulled from the game for Richie Hebner (3B)
Madlock finished the season with a .323 batting average

Madlock had previously won the batting title in 1975 (.354 ba), 1976 (.339 ba) and 1981(.341 ba)

Forbes Field - Pittsburgh



Forbes Field was the third home of the Pittsburgh Pirates, after Recreation Park and Exposition Park. The Pirates played their home games at Forbes Field from 1909 until June 28, 1970, when the Pirates moved into Three Rivers Stadium.

1909, in the first season playing at Forbes, the Pirates deleted the Detroit Tigers in the World Series.
August 5, 1921, KDKA radio had the first live radio broadcast of a MLB game, when Harold W Arlin announced the play-by-play between the Pirates and Philadelphia Phillies.
May 25, 1935, Babe Ruth hit his last 3 career home runs, playing for the Boston Braves in a losing effort against the Pirates

Forbes Field was named after British General John Forbes, who fought in the French and Indian War.

Forbes Field was also home to the Pittsburgh Steelers (NFL), Pittsburgh Panthers (University of Pittsburgh - NCAA), Homestead Grays (Negro Leagues), Pittsburgh Americans (AFL) and Pittsburgh Phantoms (NPSL)

the Pirate pitcher saved 158 games, pitching 1,071 innings
2016 - Gene Baker
became the first African-American manager in organized baseball during a game in Los Angeles, 1963

The Wilkinsburg Stamp Club was founded as the Westinghouse Stamp Club in the early 1930s. The Club met in Wilknsburg at a Westinghouse building on Pennwood Ave. Shortly after World War II, the prominent members of the club formed the present organization.
Since 1951, an annual exhibition and bourse is held in the spring of each year, titled Wilkpex. the exhibition features exhibits,a youth area, members flea market, a USPS substation with an annual pictorial postmark focused on Pittsburgh related sports and dealers.
Besides baseball, the Wilkpex postmarks featured Arnold Palmer, college and professional football and basketball
