Cities Series : 2003 - Athletics v Phillies

2003-June-06/08 Veterna's Stadium - Philadelphia Pa

June-06: Oakland Athletics 7 – 4 Philadelphia Phillies
June-08: Oakland Athletics 1 – 7 Philadelphia Phillies (rain date)
June-08: Oakland Athletics 3 – 8 Philadelphia Phillies

The City Series was the name of a series of intracity baseball games played between Major League Baseball's Philadelphia Athletics of the American League and its predecessors, and the Philadelphia Phillies of the National League that ran from 1883 through 1954. While the games were officially exhibitions, they were a matter of prestige in Philadelphia and a long rivalry existed between the players, management, and fans

The Athletics played the Phillies for the first time in interleague play in June 2003 at Veterans Stadium. The Phillies invited former A's Eddie Joost and Gus Zernial to the games. Connie Mack's daughter Ruth Mack Clark attended the first game. Former Florida U.S. Senator Connie Mack III, Mack's grandson, threw out the first ball.

Paul Owens - Philadelphia Phillies

1984-Jul-18 Philadelphia Pa - Minisink Cover
1st anniversary of Paul Owens being named manger of the Phillies

Paul 'The Pope” Owens (1924 – 2003) - American Major League Baseball front office executive, manager, and scout. Earlier, during his playing career, Owens was a first baseman and catcher, and then a manager, in minor league baseball

Owens' entire Major League career was spent with the Philadelphia Phillies. He was the general manager and principal architect of the 1980 Phillies, who won the third National League (NL) pennant and became the first World Series champion in franchise history — breaking a 97-year streak of futility dating to the team's founding in 1883. Owens was general manager of the Phillies from June 3, 1972, through the end of 1984, and twice (1972; 1983–1984) added the title of field manager to his job description

In 1983, he took the managerial reins of the Phillies in mid-season and led them to their fourth pennant, but lost to the Baltimore Orioles in the 1983 World Series. After his tenure as manager ended the following year, he remained with the team as an advisor and scout for the rest of his life
