Babe Ruth - 1983

PM Cover (Peter Ma)

Babe Ruth -1983 - unofficial postmarks

Bronx NY postmark on Babe Ruth League Baseball
Artcraft cachet with Bronx, NY Stadium Station unofficial hand cancel
Robinson Stamps cachet with Brooklyn, NY unofficial hand cancel
Robinson Stamps cachet with Cooperstown, NY unofficial hand cancel
signed by stamp designer R Gangel
New York Yankees stationery with multiple cancelations

The fun of obtaining unofficial postmarks is traveling to various post offices and trying to convince the staff that it is within regulation to postmark a stamp that is not available at their station until the following day.

I was fortunate to be part of a small group that had a connection in Chicago that mailed the stamps to New York where we picked them up at the airport. The group split put their purchases and moved out to obtain some unofficials. I went with 2 friends (Bob and Billy) to the Bronx, New York City (St Vincent's) and Brooklyn.

In Brooklyn after our request we were brought into a back room (not sure why the PO needs an interrogation room!).. We explained the regulations and our wishes, and after a short wait they were very accommodating..

Peter Ma of Hawaii wrote of his experiences obtaining unofficial from Hawaii..Since Hawaii is 5 hours behind Chicago, a package leaving at 10:30 am Chicago would arrive around 2:00 pm in Hawaii. Peter received his package and made it to the Hawaii Philatelic Center at 2:40 (closing time was 3:00). He was able to obtain 25 postmarks. With the help of several relatives and friends, Peter was able to obtain postmarks from the Navy Cantonment, Honolulu Main Post Office and University Station...
