Black Sox Scandal 100th Anniversary

Eight members of the Chicago White Sox were accused of fixing to lose the 1919 World Series against the Cincinnati Reds in exchange for cash from the gambling syndicate run by Arnold Rothstein.

Judge Kenesaw Mountain Landis was appointed the first Commissioner of Baseball, with absolute control over the game, in an effort to restore its integrity. Despiser acquittals in public trials in 1921, Landis permanently banned all eight from professional baseball.

Carlton Fisk played for the Boston Red Sox (1969, 1971-1980) and the Chicago White Sox (1981-1993) for a 24-year career.

Fisk was unanimously voted American League Rookie of the Year 1972. At the time of his retirement he held the record for most home runs by a catcher with 351, most games played at the position of catcher 2,226, and most years behind the plate with 24.

Mark Buerhle of the Chicago White Sox pitched a perfect game against the  Tampa Bay Rays at US Cellular field in Chicago.

The Sox defeated the Rays 5-0, on a second inning grand slam from Josh Fields, and an RBI from Alexei Ramirez in the 5th inning.

In the top of the 9th inning, Gabe Kapler of the Rays leadoff with a blast to deep left-center. DeWayne Wise made a spectacular catch, taking a home run away from Kapler, to pressure the perfect game.

Buerhle also pitched a no-hit game on April 8, 2007 against the Texas Rangers at US Cellular Field

1913 Tour - Chicago white Sox v New York Giants

1918, White Sox owner Charles Comiskey launched a world wide tour to promote baseball. The tour began on Oct 18, 1913 taking the New York Giants and the Chicago White Sox through the Midwest, the West Coast, Tokyo, Shanghai, Hong Kong, Manila, Sydney, Caro, Rome, Paris and London.

An advertisement was place in the Blue Rapids Times, with a guarantee of $1,000.00 to bring the game to town. And the town turned out. A special sail service was commissioned with 11 passenger trains for the teams and fans to arrive to the small town of Blue Rapids. The crowd was near 3,000, with estimates over closer to 5,000. Blue Rapids was a town of 1,800...

Fans paid $1.00 in advance and $1.50 general admission at the door.

The game started at 2:30pm, Joe Benz of the White Sox facing Hooks Wiltse of the Giants.
Wilts would give up 4 home runs in the game, as the White Sox won 8-5.
Buck Weaver led the Sox, going 3 for 4, with every member of the White Sox getting at least one hit.

Larry Doyle, who helped the Giants to the NL pennant, went 4 for 4. Jim Thorpe got 2 hits in the Giants lead-off position
The great Christy Mathewson, made an appearance as first base coach for the Giants.

The New York Mets retired Tom Seaver's #41 during a pre-game ceremony at Shea Stadium. Seaver played for the Mets from 1967-1977, as well as for the Cincinnati Reds, Chicago White Sox and Boston Red Sox.

The New York Mets honored Tom Seaver's induction into the Baseball Hall of Fame with a celebration and presentation of his Hall of Fame ring.

Seaver who has 311 career wins, won 198 games while with the Mets. Seaver has won the Cy Young Award three times, while with the Mets.

Heavy rains kept most of the 40,000 ticket holders away from the ceremony. The Mets decided to honor Seaver a second time on September 1 to allow those fanes unable to attend (real fans endured the rain) to join in the celebration. before the sparse crowd Seaver said "My best years were spent wearing the Mets uniform."

Seaver is the first "homegrown" Met to enter the Hall of Fame.

I was in attendance and had the program canceled with the first day postmark. I had approached the ticket window and saw Mets' manager George Hamburger in the booth on the phone. I waited until he finished and requested his autograph on the program
