Jackie Robinson - 1982

August 2, 1982 Cooperstown, NY
The USPS honored Jackie Robinson, the first baseball player to break the major league baseball color-barrier. Robinson was signed by Branch Rickey of the Brooklyn Dodgers and Robinson reported to their minor league team the Montreal Royals in 1946. In 1947 Robinson moved up to the parent club the Dodgers.

Robinson was more than just a baseball player. He was a star athlete at UCLA, where he competed in baseball, football, basketball and track. During World War II he reached the rank of first lieutenant. Following the war he joined the Negro Leagues' KC Monarchs.

During and after his career with the Dodgers (1947-1956) he continued to be a voice of human and civil rights.

Eltern Schiller compiled a list of cachets created for the Jackie Robinson Stamp, which was published in First Days the journal of the American First Day Cover Society. He listed 217 cachet producers, many with variations. He stated that there were more than twice the number of cachets produced than for the 1936 baseball stamp. He has listed over 39 different unofficial postmarks for the issue.

My goal is to document as many as possible...
