The Baseball Writers' Association of America (BBWAA) held an election to select from among recent players, voting Bruce Sutter into the Hall.

2005-Jul-26 the Hall announced that its board of directors had approved a special election to be held in 2006, by the Committee on African-American Baseball, of Negro leagues and pre-Negro leagues candidates. The Committee selected 17 players and executives for induction: Ray Brown, Willard Brown, Andy Cooper, Frank Grant, Pete Hill, Biz Mackey, José Méndez, Alex Pompez, Louis Santop, Mule Suttles, Ben Taylor, Cristóbal Torriente, Sol White, Jud Wilson, Effa Manley, owner of the Newark Eagles from 1935 to 1948; Cum Posey, owner of the Homestead Grays from 1920 to 1946; J. L. Wilkinson, owner of the All Nations and Kansas City Monarchs teams from 1912 to 1948.

Elections to the National Baseball Hall of Fame for 2022 were conducted according to the rules most recently amended in 2016. As in the past, the Baseball Writers' Association of America (BBWAA) voted by mail to select from a ballot of recently retired players, with results announced on January 25. David Ortiz, in his first year of eligibility, was the only player elected from the BBWAA ballot. The Early Baseball Era Committee elected Buck O'Neil and Bud Fowler, while the Golden Days Era Committee elected Minnie Miñoso, Gil Hodges, Jim Kaat, and Tony Oliva
