Jim Thorpe

Jim Thorpe (1887 – 1953) was an American athlete and Olympic gold medalist. A citizen of the Sac and Fox Nation, Thorpe was the first Native American to win a gold medal for the United States in the Olympics. Considered one of the most versatile athletes of modern sports, he won two Olympic gold medals in the 1912 Summer Olympics (one in classic pentathlon and the other in decathlon). He also played football (collegiate and professional), professional baseball, and professional basketball.

Thorpe grew up in the Sac and Fox Nation in Indian Territory (what is now the U.S. state of Oklahoma)

Johnny Mize "The Big Cat"


John Robert Mize (1913 – 1993), "The Big Cat", professional baseball player, coach and scout. He played as a first baseman in Major League Baseball (MLB) for 15 seasons between 1936 and 1953, (St. Louis Cardinals, New York Giants, New York Yankees) Mize was a ten-time All-Star 

He was selected for induction to the Baseball Hall of Fame by the Veterans Committee in 1981. In 2014, he was inducted into the St. Louis Cardinals Hall of Fame Museum

Oklahoma native Carl Hubbell was honored this day at the Carl Hubbell Museum, Meeker, Ok
The museum showcases memorabilia from Hubbell's career and is located in the foyer of the Meeker City Hall

Nick-named King Carl, Hubbell pitched for the New York Giants from 1928-1943. Twice voted NL Most Valuable Player, he was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1947.

Hubbell set the record for most consecutive wins at 24 during the 1936-1937 seasons. His performance in the 1934 All-Star Game is legendary, as he struck out 5 consecutive American League All-Stars - Babe ruth, Lou Gehrig, Jimmie Foxx, Al Simmons, Joe Cronin

September 29, 1954 - Dusty Rhodes of the New York Giants pinch hitting for Monte Irvin homered with Willie Mays and Hank Thompson on base in the 10th inning of the 1st game of the World Series to give the Giants a 5-2 victory. they went on to defeat the Cleveland Indians 4 games to 0. Rhodes got 4 hits in 6 time at bat, drove in 7 runs and hit 2 home runs in the 4 game sweep

Jim Thorpe grew up in the Sac and Fox Nation, Oklahoma. He attended the Carlisle Indian Industrial School in Carlise, Pa, where he earned All-American honors in football. A natural athlete, Thorpe gained fame for his success in the 1912 Olympics. He played football for 6-teams in the NFL eventually serving as the first President of the American Professional Football Association, which would become the NFL. Many of the cachet designs for the Thorpe stamp issued in 1984 show him as an Olympian or football player.

Thorpe also played in baseball signing his first contract with the New York Giants in 1913 playing through 1915 and again in 1917-1919. Thorpe also played for the Cincinnati Reds in 1917 and the Boston Braves in 1919.
