St Louis Cardinals - 140 years

March 25, 2022 St Louis, Mo

The first reported baseball game played in St Louis was on July 9, 1860 between the Cyclones and the Morning Stars, two local clubs

The National Association of Professional Base Ball Players (National Association) was founded in 1871 and continued until 1875. In 1875 the league had two teams from St Louis: the Red Stockings and the Brown Stockings. The Brown Stockings continued as part of the National League for two seasons (1876-1877)

By 1882 the Brown Stockings went through several reorganizations until they became a stable organization and joined the American Association. The name was shortened to the Browns for the 1883 season. 1899 the team was renamed the Perfectos. The Perfectos uniform featured cardinal red trim and sox striping. A fan was heard to declare "What a lovely shade of Cardinal", and the nickname was adopted in the 1900 season

1902, an American League team moved from Milwaukee to St Louis taking the name St Louis Browns. 1953 the team relocated to Baltimore as the Orioles
