Yankees v Mets - Exhibition : 1989

1989-Apr-02 Flushing, NY - Shea Stadium
The April 1 game was played at Yankee Stadium

The Mayor's Trophy Game, a label given to an annual in-season exhibition game in New York City, was originally played between the New York Yankees and New York Giants, was first played in 1946. The Brooklyn Dodgers in 1951. The series was discontinued after the Dodgers and Giants moved west following the 1957 season

The formation of the New York Mets in 1962, allowed for the game to resume in 1963 until 1983

1989 the Yankees and Mets met for a 2-game exhibition pre-season game. this was not part of the Mayor's Trophy series, held previous years. The /advent of interleave play diminished the need for an annual game to be resumed
