Winston Salem Pond Giants

Winston Salem Pond Giants business envelopes found on internet searches

The Pond giants are one of the oldest semiprofessional baseball teams in the country, first organized in 1914. The team name came from an area along the Northwest Boulevard and North Cherry Street that flooded after a reservoir broke in 1904.

Before the team integrated in 1956, the Pond Giants were a negro team of men, who held full time jobs and played in their spare time. The players were not salaried, but paid from gate receipts. Many of their games were played at Southside Park, although the Pond Giants traveled throughout the South playing other teams in North Carolina, Virginia and West Virginia.

As semipro teams popularity declined the Giants continued through to the 1998.

2007 the Winston-Salem Warthogs honored the Pond Giants at Ernie Shore Field

2016 the Pond Giants were honored by the Winston-Salem Dash (Carolina League), when the team wore jersey in honor of the Giants
