Hall of Fame - 1986 : Doerr, McCovey, Lombardi

1986-Jan-08 New York NY - Hall of Fame Election

Baseball card pasted on cover by Elten Schiller
I had the honor and pleasure to meet with Mr Schiller at the Cooperstown post office to trade McCovey Induction covers.
The card used for the cover is taken from a San Diego Padres stadium promotion, which featured a McCovey Hall of Fame Induction pin

Unique internet find -
Found this cover with Bobby Doerr autograph as part of a lot that was sold at auction. I find it interesting that the cachet, which was pasted-on had fallen off. The signature still maintains some value to the induction day cover

Jackie Robinson - 15th Anniversary

While searching the internet for baseball related envelopes and postmarks, I came across a thread from 2008 called Stuff No One Else Has on the Rebelscum Forums. I do not belong to this thread, but I really liked the cover that was posted and I am taking the opportunity to show it, so more fans can enjoy it. The postmark is dated Brooklyn April 19, 1962 and the envelope is signed by several of the Brooklyn Dodgers who played alongside Jackie Robinson (Carl Furillo, Al Gionfrido, Pee Wee Reese, Eddie Stanky, Ralph Branca, Commissioner AB Chandler and others)

The cachet is a newspaper sports editorial cartoon that ran in the New York Daily News called This Day in Sports. On April 10, 1947 Jackie Robinson broke the color barrier in Major League Baseball. The cartoon was drawn by Len Hollreiser, and was a daily feature in the newspaper.

A great piece of history!

Hall of Fame Game

The Baseball Hall of Fame Game, Doubleday Field, Cooperstown, NY

As part of the 1939 celebration of the Baseball Hall of Fame, current and former major league players representing 16 major league teams played a game at Doubleday Field. The team captains were Honus Wagner and Eddie Collins

The following year team owners agreed to send two teams each summer to play a benefit game as part of the Induction weekend celebrations. The games featured one team from each of the leagues.  The 1940 game featured the Boston Red Sox and the Chicago Cubs. By 2003 the game was moved to an earlier date in the calendar, and would be played on a weekend unrelated to the Hall of Fame Induction ceremonies. The final game would be played in 2008, but was canceled due to inclement weather.
