Walter Crosby is well known in the world of first day covers, naval covers, airmail and patriotic covers. This covers featured a photo pasted into a frame with text regarding the event. It is known that varieties exist, as text would have font changes and color variations, from changing the ink on the printing press.
A seaman, Crosby collected naval covers during his tour of duty. He opened a stamp shop in San Pedro after leaving the service. It was during this time he started producing and servicing covers. His signature style came in 1935 when he produced thermographed covers that featured a raised effect on the printed design.
The Universal Ship Cancellation Society recognized Walter Crosby as one of the most influential persons to the hobby. He was inducted into the USCS Hall of Fame in 1996.
