Whitey Herzog - Manager of the Year

1982 Sporting News Manager of the Year

The Sporting News was a print magazine, now a digital only publication that was established in 1886 becoming the dominant publication covering baseball. Published weekly it was known as the Bible of Baseball.

1936 the Sporting News established the Manager of the year award, annually to one manager expanding to one from each league in 1986.

White Herzog played professionally from 1956-1963 (Washington Senators, KC Athletics, Baltimore Orioles, Detroit Tigers) before moving to roes as scout, farm system director, general manager and field manager (Texas Rangers, California Angels, KC Royals, St Louis Cardinals).

Herzog led the 1982 Cardinals to a World Series Championship. The Cardinals went 92-70 on the season for their first National League East Division title. They defeated the Atlanta Braves to win the National League Championship. In the World Serie the Cardinals defeated the Milwaukee Brewers 4 games to 3..

Phil Rizzuto


The New York Yankees honored long time Yankee shortstop and broadcaster Phil Rizzuto, the greatest shortstop in franchise history ( this was before Derek Jeter)..
The Yankees retired Rizzuto's jersey #10 and erected a plaque in monument park. Rizzuto affectionately known as "Scooter" played for the Yankees from 1941-1956. Je lead the American League in sacrifice at bats from 1949-1952, was voted player of the year 1950, awarded the Hickok Belt for Best Pro Athlete 1950, League MVP 1950, awarded Babe Ruth Award as Outstanding World Series Player 1951, 5-time American League All-Star
ON this day Tom Seaver would overshadow his future broadcast partner by winning his 300th game as the Chicago White Sox defeated the Yankees 4-1

Yogi Berra -

December 16, 1983 New York

Yogi Berra played for the New York Yankees from 1946-1963, during which time he was named American League MVP 3 times, won 13 World Series Championships, selected to the All-Star team 18 times, elected to the Hall of Fame and had his jersey retired by the Yankees.
Berra would finish his career with the New York Mets 1965.

In his role as coach and manager, Berra would manage the New York Yankees in 1964 leading the team to the World Series against the St Louis Cardinals. The Cardinals won the series and Berra was fired, when GM Ralph Houk stated the Yankees did not feel Berra was ready to manage.

Berra would again manage the New York Mets from 1972-1975, following a coaching stint with the team. The Mets would win the NL Championship in 1975, losing to the Oakland A's in the World Series. Berra was again fired.

1976 Berra rejoined the Yankees as a coach, and the team won 3 consecutive league titles and 2 World Series. In 1983 Berra was named as Billy Martin's replacement. The 1984 team finished the season in 3rd. He would be fired by the Yankees after the 16th game of the 1985 season..

Berra would go on to coach the Houston Astros from 1986-1989

NY Yankees Old-timers Day


In 1939 the New York Yankees held a celebration in recognition of Lou Gehrig's achievements. In 1948 Babe Ruth was honored at Yankees Stadium surrounded by teammates.

The first Old-Timers Day took place on the final day of the 1947 season and continues today bringing back to the stadium heroes, hall of famers and fan favorites

As part of the 1984 Old-Timers Day celebration, the Yankees honored Elston Howard and Roger Maris by retiring their respective jerseys.

New York Mets - Hall of Fame


Jerry Koosman, a left-handed pitcher played for the New York Mets (1967-1978), Minnesota Twins (1979-1981), Chicago White Sox (1981-1983) and Philadelphia Phillies (1984-1985). His record stands at 222-209, with a 3.36 ERA
His greatest achievement was winning the 1969 World Series with the Miracle Mets

The New York mets Hall of Fame was created to recognize the careers of players, managers, broadcasters and executives who helped the Mets achieve glory.

Originally located in the Diamond Club in Shea Stadium opened in 1981. The Hall re-opened in Citi Field in 2010 as the Hall of Fame and Museum
