Greensboro, NC has had a professional time since the early 1900's, in various leagues. The earliest teams were known as the Greensboro Patriots, in honor of the Battle of Guilford Court House.
From 1979-1993, the team was known as the Greensboro Hornets, affiliated with the Cincinnati Reds (1979, 1988-1989) New York Yankees (1980-1984, 1990 -2002) Boston Red Sox (1980-1984)
In 1994 the team was re-christened the Greensboro Bats, until 2004. In 2005 the team took on the name the Greensboro Grasshoppers
The team played in the South Atlantic League
