This was the second largest international amateur athletic event, second to the Summer Olympic Games. The 1993 event marked the first time the World University Games were held in the United States

World University Games began in Paris in 1923. It is also known as "Universiade" (a combination of University and Olympiad). Over 3,600 athletes from 117 countries competed in 12 different sports, which included baseball, as shown in several cachets produced for the first day of issue. This was the first time baseball was represented at the games
