Chicago Cubs - 1988 : First Night Game

Aug 8, 1988 pictorial postmark commemorating the Cubs first night game
1988-Aug-09 Wrigley Field - Chicago, Ill

The first Chicago Cubs night game was scheduled to be played on Aug 8, 1988 abasing the Philadelphia Phillies. The Cubs were the last team to install lights at their field. Owner Philip Wrigley had planned to install lights in 1942, but plans were put on hold due to World War II. It would take the Cubs 46 years to play that initial night game

The game started and both teams played until a summer downpour ended the game. The Cubs were leading 3-1. The game was called and the first night game would take place the following night, Aug 9 with the New York Mets coming to town. The Cubs would defeat the Mets 6-4 before 36, 399 fans

The game scheduled for Aug 8, would be made up on Sept 5, as part of a double-header. The Phillies defeated the Cubs 4-3

Konni Mac - Roy Campanella

2021 - Konni Mackenzie
sketch by S. Preston

I have the fortune to attend NY Comic Con. This year I came across the booth of S. Preston, a fantastic artist who creates minimalist stadium art and ballpark princesses. He was kind enough to draw his new original character that he hopes will help promote baseball to the girls who go to the game with their dads.

I am sure she will be affectionally called Konni Mac!
Check out his work

Toronto Blue Jays

April 9, 2001 Canada Post first day cover

Toronto Blue Jays were founded in 1977, originally playing at Exhibition Stadium. The team color, blue is the traditional color of Toronto's collegiate and professional sport teams, including the NHL - Maple Leafs and the CFL- Argonauts. The Blue also references the original team owners Labatt Brewing Co., producers of Labatt's Blue

The Jays played their inaugural game on April 7, 1977 against the Chicago White Sox before a home crowd of 44,649. A minor snowstorm hit the stadium just before the game started, but the Jays would still go on to defeat the White Sox 9-5 powered by Doug Alt's 2-home runs
