The experiment works as Mantle homers in the 10th inning giving the New York Yankees the 3-2 victory over the Chicago White Sox, at Yankee Stadium

Doubleday Field


 

100th Anniversary of Doubleday Field, Cooperstown, NY
Named for Abner Doubleday, the field is located 2-village blocks away from the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum. The ground have been used for baseball since 1920, on Elihu Phinney's farm. A wooden grandstand was built in 1924, let to be replaced by a steel and concrete structure in 1939. Current seating capacity has been extended to 9,791 fans

USS Lou Gehrig

copy of a launch cover for the USS Lou Gehrig, interesting that the cachet producer put "Baseball star and hero of Brooklyn fans".. I am sure Brooklyn Dodgers fans did not agree.
The USS Lou Gehrig was christened by Gehrig's mother Christine on Jan 17, 1943 South Portland, Maine, Shipbuilding Corp

A Contest was announced, that the schools that gather the most scrap could name the new ship. New York won and chose Gehrig. Kansas students were offering Amelia Earhart, Texas chose Bigfoot Wallace (Texas Ranger - lawman) Minnesota chose the Mayo Brothers.

Gehrig was the second baseball player to be honored, Christy Mathewson was the first, Joe McGraw was the third. The USS Lou Gehrig would participate in the D-Day invasion of France, landing on Normandy Beach on Gehrig's birthday June 19

Oldsmobile Park opened on April 3, 1996 with a game between the University of Michigan and Michigan State University. On April 5 the Lansing Lugnuts (KC Royals affiliate) had their opening day against the Rockford Cubbies

2010 the name of the field was changed to Thomas M. Cooley Law School Stadium, as part of a sponsorship agreement. Later that year the Jackson National Life Insurance Company purchased the rights to name the field, and the name was changed to Jackson Field at Thomas M. Cooley Law School Stadium

2014 an agreement with the Jackson National Life Insurance Company secured the name of the field as Jackson Field

 April 27, 1994 the USPS issued a series of steps honoring film stars of the silent screen. The stamps were designed by famed artist Hirschfeld. Four of the stamps issued had baseball in their lives

Charlie Chaplin (1889-1977) - shown participating in a 1917 charity baseball game
English comic actor, filmmaker and composer who rose to fame in the silent film era. Became a worldwide icon through his comic portrayal as the Tramp

Harold Lloyd (1893-1971) American actor, comedian and stunt performer. Considered as one of the most influential film comedians alongside Chaplin and Keaton
Lloyd incorporated the game of baseball into his movies "Speedy" and Over the Fence"
 
Clara Bow (9105-1965) - American actress in the silent film era as The It Girl, and a leading sex symbol of the times. Publicity photo of Bow in a Hollywood Stars uniform, grew up as a tomboy playing baseball, football and learned to box

Buster Keaton (1895-1966) - American actor, comedian, director, producer, screenwriter, stunt performer
Keaton wrote in his autobiography.."baseball has been my favorite sport. I started playing the game as soon as I was old enough to handle a glove." Keaton starred in College (1927), The Cameraman (1928) and One Run Elmer (1935), and often used baseball to relax while making movies

 The US Olympic baseball demonstration team tour, June 11-July 28, participated in games throughout the US, playing against the South Korea, Japan, Stan Musial All-Stars, Jackson Mets, Louisville Redbirds, Greenville Braves, Tri-City Triplets, as well as several local All-Star teams

In 1948 the Boston Braves on the National League Pennant. Two pitchers, Warren Spahn and Johnny Sain won a combined 39 games to lead the team to victory.
Boston Post writer Gerald Hern wrote the following poem in honor of the pitchers and the lack of depth in the rotation

then an off day
followed by rain
