Sept 8 pictorial postmark commemorating the 62nd home run, on the back of a Busch Stadium postcard
Several players had come close to Roger Maris' home run record of 61 in 1961. In 1998 mark McGwire(St Louis Cardinals) and Sammy Sosa (Chicago Cubs) sparked the imagination of every fan, as they raced toward a new league record.
Based on the previous year it was expected that Ken Griffey Jr and McGwire would race to the finish, but Sammy Sosa proved to the be front runner as they left Griffey behind with a total of 47 HRs.
Sept 7, 1998 McGwire would reach the 61 HR mark playing against Sosa and the Cubs, with the Roger Maris family in the stands.
Sosa would tie McGwire at 62 and would continue their pace as they stood tied at 65 HRs. Sosa would hit his 66th HR against the Houston Astros, as McGwire continued to reach the 70 HR mark on Sep 27...
